The Panti Sisters: Movie Review

I was intrigued when I saw the trailer of The Panti Sisters on television. Imagine how Paolo Ballesteros, Martin Del Rosario, and Christian Bables portrayed as gay brothers in the movie. I wonder how the story evolves and how it was concluded.

The movie was produced by ABS-CBN Films and an official entry to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (Filipino Film Festival). The Panti Sisters were under the direction of Jun Lana.

Synopsis Of The Story

Don Emilio y Panti (John Arcilla) has three siblings, Gabriel (portrayed by Paolo Ballesteros), Daniel (portrayed by Martin Del Rosario), and Samuel (portrayed by Christian Bables), and they are all gays. Their father, Don Emilio, called them in the mansion to announce that he has Testicular Cancer. Don Emilio told to his three siblings that he may live at least a year and a half.

Don Emilio made a decision to give his inheritance to his siblings if they will bear a child. Don Emilio also added a condition regarding how they can get their inheritance: (1) they should live in the mansion, (2) no one should act as a gay while living in Don Emilio’s mansion.

The three siblings boosted their morale to find a girl who will bear their child. And luckily, Samuel bears a child to Chiqui (Via Antonio), a lesbian, but fell in love with Samuel and later she became a nun. But in the latter part of the story, Chiqui was having a miscarriage and Don Emilio has a stoned-heart and he said that the game is still not yet over. They can bear another child anytime soon. But the three gay brothers refused to do that and left Don Emilio.

The three gay brothers made a decision to reconcile each other. But expected circumstances happened when Daniel was shot dead. During the burial, they did not see Don Emilio’s face and Gabriel and Samuel said that their father is a cold-hearted man.

But as the story goes on, Don Emilio reconciled to Gabriel and Samuel while visiting Daniel’s tomb.

Awards

The Panti Sisters was awarded three awards in the recently concluded Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. Martin Del Rosario got the Best Actor Award; Maolen Padul won the Best Production Design, and the movie was awarded as the Audience Choice.

The Panti Sisters was nominated to several award-giving bodies.

Movie Review

This movie gave emphasis on gender sensitivity and giving the enlightenment to each and every people that gays are not a curse – it’s a gift. But this is against the teachings of the Holy Bible that God only created men and women. But this does not mean that they should not be recognized in society. This movie implies how gays were misjudged but they are also a creation of God and no one should judge them.

Even though most men said that gays are so weak but “Mas lalaki pa ang lalaki sa bakla” (“Gays are more masculine than men”). This movie emphasizes the support of the LGBT community to avoid discrimination among these groups.

This movie also emphasized the true meaning of family and forgiveness. We people are not perfect and we should humble ourselves if we did wrong to others.

The Panti Sisters also emphasize how Filipino ties are – and I am proud of it.
